THE POWER OF INTEGRITY: DOING WHAT IS RIGHT EVEN WHEN NOBODY IS WATCHING

THE POWER OF INTEGRITY: DOING WHAT IS RIGHT EVEN WHEN NOBODY IS WATCHING

THE POWER OF INTEGRITY: DOING WHAT IS RIGHT EVEN WHEN NOBODY IS WATCHING

Key Scripture: Proverbs 10:9 (KJV)

"He that walketh uprightly walketh surely: but he that perverteth his ways shall be known."

INTRODUCTION: WHO ARE YOU WHEN NOBODY IS WATCHING?

Have you ever been in a situation where you could do something wrong without anyone discovering it?

Perhaps you were given money that was more than you expected.

Maybe someone trusted you with an important responsibility.

Perhaps you had an opportunity to tell a lie that would protect you from embarrassment.

Or maybe you were tempted to take advantage of someone who would never know what happened.

In such moments, an important question arises:

Will you do what is right even when nobody is watching?

This question reveals something about our character.

It is easy to appear honest when people are observing us.

It is easy to speak about righteousness when we are standing before others.

It is easy to encourage people to follow God's Word when our own decisions are not being tested.

But genuine integrity is demonstrated through the choices we make when we are alone, when nobody is praising us, and when doing the right thing may cost us something.

Proverbs 10:9 reminds us that those who walk uprightly walk securely.

This means that integrity is not merely about protecting our reputation. It is about developing a life that is guided by truth, righteousness, and responsible behaviour.

Today, let us examine what the Bible teaches about integrity and how we can practise it in our homes, workplaces, businesses, churches, and communities.

Your character is revealed not only by what you say in public, but also by the decisions you make when nobody is there to applaud you.

1. UNDERSTAND WHAT INTEGRITY REALLY MEANS

Integrity means being honest, trustworthy, and consistent in your actions.

It means that your behaviour should reflect the values you claim to believe.

A person of integrity does not deliberately deceive others to gain an advantage.

They do not make promises they have no intention of keeping.

They do not use their position to exploit people.

They do not pretend to be righteous in public while deliberately practising dishonesty in private.

Integrity does not mean that a person never makes a mistake.

Every human being can fail.

The important question is how we respond when we recognise that we have done something wrong.

Do we accept responsibility?

Do we apologise when necessary?

Do we make an effort to correct the situation?

Or do we continue making excuses and blaming other people?

Psalm 15 describes the character of someone who desires to live in God's presence.

Among the qualities mentioned are speaking truth from the heart and keeping one's word even when doing so is difficult.

This teaches us that integrity involves both our speech and our actions.

If you promise to do something, make a sincere effort to fulfil that promise.

If you discover that you have made a mistake, acknowledge it honestly.

If you receive something that does not belong to you, take appropriate steps to return it.

If you are responsible for another person's property or resources, handle them carefully.

Integrity begins when we recognise that our decisions matter, even when nobody else knows about them.

2. BE HONEST EVEN WHEN THE TRUTH IS UNCOMFORTABLE

One of the greatest tests of integrity occurs when telling the truth becomes difficult.

Sometimes, we lie because we are afraid of punishment.

Sometimes, we exaggerate because we want people to think highly of us.

Sometimes, we hide information because we want to avoid responsibility.

Sometimes, we make false promises because we want to satisfy someone in the moment.

But dishonesty can create problems that become more difficult to correct over time.

A small lie may require another lie to protect it.

An exaggerated story may damage someone's reputation.

A dishonest business transaction may destroy a relationship.

A false promise may create disappointment and weaken trust.

Proverbs 12:22 teaches that lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, while those who deal faithfully are His delight.

This verse reminds us that honesty matters to God.

Consider a business owner who discovers that a customer has paid more than the correct amount.

The customer may never realise the mistake.

The business owner could keep the extra money without anyone knowing.

But integrity requires an honest response.

Consider a person who makes a mistake at work.

They could blame another employee.

They could hide the mistake.

Or they could acknowledge what happened and help find a solution.

The honest response may be uncomfortable, but it creates an opportunity for accountability and improvement.

Doing what is right may not always be the easiest decision, but it is an important foundation for a trustworthy life.

3. PRACTISE INTEGRITY IN YOUR BUSINESS AND WORKPLACE

Integrity is especially important in business and professional life.

People depend on one another for honest services, accurate information, responsible decisions, and fair treatment.

When integrity is absent, trust begins to disappear.

A business owner may deceive customers about the quality of a product.

An employee may deliberately neglect responsibilities while pretending to be working.

A person may use company resources for personal purposes without permission.

Someone may make financial promises they know they cannot fulfil.

These behaviours may produce short-term advantages, but they can create serious consequences.

Luke 16:10 teaches that a person who is faithful in little things will also be faithful in greater things.

This principle encourages us to take even small responsibilities seriously.

If you operate a business, treat customers honestly.

Provide accurate information about the products and services you offer.

Avoid making promises that you cannot reasonably fulfil.

If you manage money, keep proper records.

If you employ people, treat them fairly and communicate responsibly.

If you are an employee, perform your duties honestly, even when supervision is limited.

If you receive confidential information, handle it appropriately.

Do not use another person's trust as an opportunity for personal gain.

Remember that success built on dishonesty can damage both your reputation and the people who depend on you.

A business that values integrity may face difficult decisions, but honesty and responsible management help create stronger relationships.

4. KEEP YOUR PROMISES AND RESPECT OTHER PEOPLE'S TRUST

Have you ever made a promise and later realised that you could not fulfil it?

Perhaps you promised to help someone.

Maybe you agreed to repay money by a certain date.

Perhaps you committed yourself to an important responsibility.

Sometimes circumstances genuinely change.

But integrity requires us to communicate honestly when we cannot fulfil an agreement.

Instead of disappearing or pretending that nothing happened, explain the situation.

If you owe someone money and cannot repay it on time, communicate respectfully and discuss a realistic plan.

If you cannot attend an important event, inform the people involved as early as possible.

If you accept a responsibility, make a sincere effort to complete it.

Ecclesiastes 5:4–5 warns about making promises to God and failing to fulfil them.

This passage reminds us that commitments should not be treated carelessly.

Before making a promise, consider whether you can reasonably fulfil it.

Do not promise simply because you want someone to like you.

Do not make commitments that you have no intention of keeping.

And when circumstances change, communicate honestly.

People may not always agree with your decisions, but they deserve truthful information.

Trust is built through consistent actions.

5. REMAIN FAITHFUL WHEN NOBODY IS WATCHING

One of the most important aspects of integrity is private behaviour.

Sometimes, people behave differently depending on who is present.

They speak respectfully when their leaders are watching but become disrespectful when those leaders leave.

They appear honest when customers are present but become dishonest when supervision is absent.

They behave responsibly in public but neglect their duties in private.

This inconsistency can weaken character.

Joseph provides an important biblical example.

In Genesis 39, Joseph was working in the household of Potiphar.

Potiphar's wife attempted to persuade Joseph to engage in wrongdoing.

Joseph refused.

He recognised that the decision would be wrong and would violate the trust placed in him.

In Genesis 39:9, Joseph explained that he could not commit such wrongdoing against his master and sin against God.

Joseph's response demonstrates an important principle.

He did not base his decision only on whether someone might discover what happened.

He recognised that his actions mattered before God.

This is the foundation of private integrity.

You should be honest when handling money alone.

You should respect other people's property when nobody is observing you.

You should avoid inappropriate behaviour even when you believe you will not be caught.

You should fulfil your responsibilities even when supervision is limited.

You should remain faithful to your values when doing so becomes inconvenient.

Integrity is not simply avoiding punishment. It is choosing righteousness because you recognise that your actions matter.

6. DO NOT ALLOW THE DESIRE FOR SUCCESS TO DESTROY YOUR CHARACTER

Many people want to succeed.

They want to improve their financial circumstances.

They want to build businesses.

They want to develop careers.

They want to provide for their families.

These desires can be pursued responsibly.

However, problems arise when people become so focused on achieving success that they abandon their principles.

They may begin manipulating others.

They may exaggerate their achievements.

They may use dishonest methods to obtain money.

They may treat people unfairly because they believe that success justifies their behaviour.

But success should not require the destruction of your character.

Proverbs 11:1 teaches that dishonest scales are an abomination to the Lord, while a just weight is His delight.

This principle reminds us that fairness matters.

If you are selling goods, use honest measurements.

If you are providing services, communicate accurately about what customers should expect.

If you are negotiating, avoid deliberately misleading the other person.

If you are managing resources, handle them responsibly.

If you are pursuing a professional opportunity, represent your qualifications honestly.

Do not assume that every profitable opportunity is a good opportunity.

Sometimes, refusing an unethical advantage is a sign of maturity.

Your financial success should not become an excuse for abandoning your values.

7. ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY WHEN YOU MAKE A MISTAKE

Integrity does not mean pretending that you are perfect.

It means responding honestly when you fail.

Sometimes, we make mistakes because we lack experience.

Sometimes, we misunderstand a situation.

Sometimes, we act carelessly.

Sometimes, we make decisions that hurt other people.

When this happens, we have a responsibility to examine our actions.

Instead of immediately blaming someone else, ask yourself:

What actually happened?

What part of this situation was my responsibility?

Did I communicate honestly?

Did I make a decision without considering the consequences?

What can I do to correct the problem?

How can I avoid repeating the same mistake?

Proverbs 28:13 teaches that concealing wrongdoing does not lead to the same outcome as acknowledging it and turning away from it.

This is an important principle of repentance and personal growth.

If you have lied, acknowledge the lie.

If you have taken something that does not belong to you, make appropriate efforts to return it.

If you have damaged someone's trust, take responsibility and demonstrate changed behaviour.

If you have spoken harshly, apologise sincerely.

Do not allow pride to prevent you from correcting your mistakes.

Sometimes, the most important step toward rebuilding trust is admitting that you were wrong.

8. BUILD A CHARACTER THAT REFLECTS CHRIST

Christian integrity is not only about avoiding wrongdoing.

It is also about developing the qualities that reflect the character of Jesus Christ.

Colossians 3:12–14 encourages believers to put on compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, forgiveness, and love.

These qualities should influence how we treat people.

A person who values integrity should be willing to listen.

They should communicate honestly.

They should treat others with dignity.

They should avoid using their influence to exploit people.

They should recognise that every person deserves appropriate respect.

Integrity should be visible in the way we speak to our families.

It should influence how we treat customers and employees.

It should guide our decisions when we are given authority.

It should affect how we respond to criticism.

It should shape our behaviour when another person makes a mistake.

Do not separate your Christian beliefs from your everyday responsibilities.

Let your faith influence your decisions at home, in business, in ministry, and in your community.

Your character is an important part of your Christian witness.

A PRACTICAL INTEGRITY CHALLENGE FOR TODAY

Before the day ends, practise these five actions.

1. Tell the truth.

Avoid exaggeration, dishonesty, and unnecessary excuses.

2. Keep one important promise.

Identify a responsibility you have been delaying and make a sincere effort to fulfil it.

3. Correct a mistake.

If you have done something wrong, acknowledge it and take appropriate steps to make things right.

4. Treat someone fairly.

Give another person the respect, honesty, and consideration they deserve.

5. Examine your private decisions.

Ask yourself whether your behaviour reflects the values you claim to believe.

You do not need to change every aspect of your life in one day.

Begin by making one honest decision.

CONCLUSION: LET YOUR CHARACTER SPEAK FOR YOU

Dear reader, integrity is one of the most valuable qualities a person can develop.

It influences how people trust us.

It affects our relationships.

It shapes our decisions.

It determines how we handle responsibility.

And it reveals whether our actions reflect the values we claim to believe.

You may not always receive recognition for doing the right thing.

Sometimes, honesty may cost you an opportunity.

Sometimes, keeping a promise may require sacrifice.

Sometimes, accepting responsibility may be uncomfortable.

But integrity is worth developing.

Do not allow the desire for money, recognition, or personal advantage to destroy your character.

Be honest when handling other people's resources.

Be faithful when nobody is watching.

Be responsible when you make a mistake.

Be fair when you have authority.

And be humble enough to accept correction.

Remember Proverbs 10:9 and the importance of walking uprightly.

As Christians, we should seek to live in a way that reflects the truth, righteousness, and love of Jesus Christ.

Your reputation is what people think about you, but your integrity is reflected in the decisions you make when doing what is right becomes difficult.

Let your life demonstrate honesty.

Let your work reflect responsibility.

Let your relationships reflect respect.

And let your character become a testimony of your faith.

May God help you to live with integrity today and every day.

LET US PRAY

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for Your Word and for teaching us the importance of honesty, righteousness, and integrity.

Please forgive me for the times I have acted dishonestly, made careless promises, or failed to take responsibility for my decisions.

Search my heart and help me recognise the areas where my character needs to grow.

Teach me to speak truthfully, treat people fairly, and handle responsibilities with wisdom.

When I am tempted to take advantage of someone, remind me to choose what is right.

When I am afraid to admit a mistake, give me the humility and courage to accept responsibility.

Help me remain honest in my business, faithful in my work, respectful in my relationships, and consistent in my Christian life.

Protect me from pride, greed, deception, and the desire for success at the expense of my character.

Help me to keep my promises and respect the trust that others place in me.

May my private decisions reflect the same values I express in public.

Teach me to live with compassion, humility, patience, and love.

May my life bring honour to Your name and encouragement to those around me.

In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, I pray.

Amen.
